- Step 1 — Tap test (sound). Flick the slab edge with a coin or knock it with a small metal tool. A clear, bell-like ring means the slab is structurally sound with no hidden cracks. A dull thud indicates internal fracturing or resin fill — walk away or demand a steep discount.
- Step 2 — Water drop test (absorption). Place a few drops of water on the polished face and time how long the bead sits before soaking in. On a dense Grade A slab the bead holds for minutes; if it darkens the stone within 10-30 seconds, the slab is too porous for a kitchen. Compare against the standard limits below.
- Step 3 — Glass scratch test (Mohs hardness). Try to scratch a piece of plain glass (Mohs ~5.5) with the stone edge. Quartzite and good granite (Mohs 6-7) scratch glass easily; marble (Mohs 3-4) will not. Conversely, scratch the stone with a steel knife (Mohs ~5.5): if the knife bites in, the stone is softer than 5.5. This confirms whether the stone matches its labeled type and hardness.
